Did You Know.... That when Joseph Gayetty invented toilet paper in 1857,
he had his name printed on each sheet.

Simply Appalling!

Being on a college campus one comes to expect students to push the limits, to challenge status quo, to try to fix what's not broken. However, sometimes they can take things a little too far or at least with a lack of respect.

At a local college campus in Southern California (Fullerton Community College), they always seem to be cutesy when it comes to their signage to get students to do just about anything. Whether it's to vote, or to attend anything, they have a tendency to have a cartoonist draw up something (copyright checked???) and attempt at some humerous line to get the attention of students.

One of the more recent signs uses the muppets to promote Career Day at the campus, by having the furry critters holding signs referring to the "will work for food," much like you see on many corners and freeway offramps across our nation. Maybe at one time this could be seen as humerous, but in today's society, with more and more Americans losing jobs, losing their homes and really are going hungry and looking for work by the millions, to use this type of sarcastic humor to get the attention of a college student is absurd and appalling.

In some ways, it's also misleading by giving these students false hope. They think that they'll walk up and simply get a well paying job. If millions of "experienced, with or without, degrees" can't get those jobs, what makes a community college student think they will... while still in community college. They need to inform students, there may be jobs, but not to the level they are expecting.

What's worse is I'm sure these signs have to be approved, and if so, shame on the administration for allowing it during these more sensitive times. After all, some of the students are older and have gone back to school because they lost a job and are trying to get another one in the first place. "Thanks for the reminder!" I'm sure some are saying when seeing these signs. If these are not pre-approved, then am I lead to believe that not one administrator or instructor or ANYONE with say has walked on campus and have not seen any of these signs? Doubt it.

I understand you're trying to catch the attention of students. I understand that cutesy and humor is often the best method. Now, I am not one for all this "political correctness" BUT for some who are struggling to provide for their families and are getting more and more depressed, may resort to begging as a means to survive, therefore this form of sarcasm, at this time in society at least, is a slap in the face. Shame on you Fullerton College! I, for one, expect a little more class from you.
